| Video Game Survey |
[Dec. 30th, 2008|04:46 pm] |
1) What was your FIRST video game console?
Intellivision
2) Name a few games you played on said console.
Burger Time, Tron Deadly Discs, Donkey Kong
3) Excluding handhelds, how many VG consoles do you own presently?
5, SNES, XBOX, PS2, GameCube Wii
4) Were you a Street Fighter nut? Any character in particular?
Not really
5) Do you think Capcom is a FUCKING awesome company with kickass character designs? Not particularly
6) Here's the scenario.. You had some friends over and you all ate FRIED CHICKEN! After the meal you all decide to play some video games. As your friend reaches for a controller you notice his/her hands are very "greasy." Are you the type that would insist they wash their hands before pawing the controller, or is it no big deal?
I am a compulsive handwasher, so yes.
7) What's your favorite RPG/Action RPG?
It's a close battle between Final Fantasies 4, 6 and 9. FF4 was my first RPG, so that probably edges the other two out.
8) Do you prefer 2D games or 3D games?
Whichever game is more fun
9) Are you an SNK fan?
Never cared for SNK
10) Are you good at DDR?
hahaha... no
11) Who wants to kick that dog's ass from Duck Hunt?
Would anyone seriously say "no"?
12) Have you skipped out on important events in life because of video games?
No important events...
13) Do you listen to video game music?
I'm fond of the Final Fantasy and Halo music.
14) Have you ever cosplayed a VG character?
No
15) Have you ever been in an arcade playing a fighting game, KICKING ASS, and then some 6 year old Asian kid comes in and OWNS YOU??
The premise is flawed. I never kicked ass at fighting games.
16) Name three games you would love to see remakes of if it was done properly.
Final Fantasy 7 Xenogears
I can't think of a third. Most games are either perfect the way they are or shouldn't ever be revisited. The two above could be improved by a graphics update only (since they were early 3D and therefore don't hold up well over time)
17) Mario or Sonic?
I never owned any Sega system, so Mario.
18) When a movie shows up in the theaters, let's use Spider-man as an example, are you likely to buy the GAME version?
The conversion of movie to videogame is only surpassed in awful by the reverse translation.
19) What is your LEAST favorite genre of video games? (ex. fighting, sports, shooters, etc.)
Arcade shooters. They make me dizzy.
20) Is there a game out there that you feel was unique and didn't get enough love?
Does Cave Story count? Though it might be getting more love soon. It's going to be on WiiWare.
21) Have you ever verbally abused a game because you couldn't beat one of the levels and/or bosses?
Battletoads, I'm looking at you...
22) Do you own any VG apparel?
Yes
23) What are your thoughts on the live-action Super Mario Bros movie?
Unintentional comedy is comedy too!
24) On that note, what did you think about the live-action Street Fighter movie?
See above.
25) Who's hottest out of the KOF chicks?
Never played King of Fighters
26) Do you say "old-school" a lot when you're having a VG conversation with others?
Too often, I think
27) Have you ever lent someone a game and they returned it to you damaged?
No
28) Do you own any imported games?
No
29) In this scenario, let's pretend you're going to get a video game tattoo! What would you get and where?
Red XIII from FF7 on my right shoulder.
30) Have you ever cried after you beat a game? If so why?
No |

| I felt powerless |
[Dec. 14th, 2008|04:17 pm] |
So, in case anyone was wondering why I seem to have dropped out of existence since Thursday, Maria and I got hit really hard by the ice storm. We had several trees crash down in our front and back yards, and the power was out in our neighborhood from 10:30 p.m. on Thursday night all the way until 10:15 a.m. this morning (Sunday).
Let me tell you, above and beyond not having access to my computer and TV, not having heat is just The Suck. Fortunately we still had the gas fireplace, which provided just enough heat to not have to go and live with my parents for the weekend. Maria and I camped out in the living room in front of the fireplace. Thanks to that thing, the first floor only dropped to 50F, unlike the second floor which got down around 40.
Today we spent pretty much the entire day outside with a chainsaw, carving up the fallen trees and branches and hauling them out to the side of the road where (supposedly) the town will be coming by to collect them in the next few days. |

| Recommendation meme |
[Dec. 4th, 2008|07:44 am] |
This meme has been going around my LJ friends list, and I made a request from aprivatefox, and striderhlc so here goes: For the first five people who make a reply to this post, I'll make a recommendation of three obscure movies you've never seen before that I think you might like.
Here's how this is going to work: - Post a request; if I don't know you very well or haven't talked to you lately, I may ask what you've enjoyed recently. - If you've seen any of my recommendations before, let me know and I'll give you a new one. If you've seen *that* before, I give up. :)
I highly recommend that all responders have a Netflix account :)
I am removing the chain-letter requirement on this meme, though. If you don't want to host one, I'm not going to tell you that you'll catch ebola or anything. If you do want to continue it, however, change the recommendations you would give to something you know. </lj> |

| The Economy |
[Nov. 24th, 2008|09:42 am] |
Is anyone else getting tired of hearing the "rollercoaster" analogy about the economy?
Especially since a waterslide would be a more accurate metaphor? |

| Ballot Questions |
[Nov. 4th, 2008|11:16 am] |
Screw secret ballot. The following are my votes on the Massachusetts propositions:
1) Repealing the state income tax will have a direct and measurable effect on school budgets. As my wife works in the school system and I intend to have children attend MA public schools sometime in the future, I must vote no.
2) I have no problems whatsoever about making the possession of small amounts of marijuana a fineable offense rather than a criminal one. Making one stupid mistake as a kid should not prevent a person from getting a job and being a useful member of society as an adult. As this proposition does not change in any way the approach the police will take regarding drug DEALERS, I intend to vote yes.
3) This is the one that people are going to criticize me for. I am going to vote no on banning dog racing from Massachusetts. First of all, the evidence of mistreatment of the dogs in Massachusetts is circumstantial and misrepresented. While there will always be a few bad apples, for the most part the dogs are treated reasonably well (because abusing them would make them poor competitors at any rate). Second, banning dog racing would have no real effect on the lives of these dogs, as they would simply be transferred to tracks in New Hampshire and Rhode Island, two nearby states that have no proscription on racing. Third, it would result in the loss of more than 1000 jobs and an even greater amount of revenue from Massachusetts in the middle of a serious economic depression. Finally, to reference the depression again, if we want to get our economy back on track, we need to keep money moving through the system. And like it or not, gambling is one of the few industries that thrive in a recession.

| Spreadsheet Question |
[Oct. 6th, 2008|08:30 pm] |
Does anyone on my friends list know how to solve this problem:
I have a spreadsheet, in it I have two columns of static data, one column lists a trip identifier, the other lists the mileage to get there. Trip | Mileage LocationA | 1.4 LocationB | 5.8
I am attempting to calculate the mileage in a separate area of the spreadsheet, for reimbursement purposes. I want to be able to type "LocationA" into the Trip column and have it automatically populate the Mileage column with the value from the data above.
I've tried using DGET(), but this requires that every column that I want to look up has to have "Trip" in the cell directly above it to work. |
